The Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies (CFKR), in collaboration with the Key City Theatre and Cranbrook Pride, is proud to present a special screening of Pride vs. Prejudice: The Delwin Vriend Story in celebration of Pride Month 2025.
This event is presented in partnership with Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) and the Edmonton Queer History Project (EQHP) and aims to honour the contributions of our local 2SLGBTQI+ community while fostering meaningful conversations about equity, human rights, and inclusion.
Pride vs. Prejudice: The Delwin Vriend Story chronicles the landmark legal battle that changed the course of Canadian history. In 1991, Delwin Vriend was fired from his job at a Christian college in Edmonton for being gay. When Alberta’s human rights legislation failed to protect him, Vriend took his case all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada — and won.

Join us as we explore films that highlight the vibrant stories, voices, and visions of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
Delwin Vriend never wanted to be a human rights activist, but in challenging his firing for being gay, he set in motion a chain of events that impacted the lives of LGBTQ+ people — not just in Alberta, not just in Canada, but around the globe (dir. Darrin Hagen).
Senator Kristopher Wells will open the film with comments about: "The history of the queer rights movement in Edmonton as reflected on film".
After the film a discussion will be moderated by Senator Paula Simons, panelists will include:
Michael Phair (founder of the AIDS Network of Edmonton, Past Chair of the Board of Governors, University of Alberta, and the first openly gay elected politician in Alberta
The Honourable Justice J.C. Lloyd (Alberta Court of Justice, Edmonton Family and Youth; and one of the first openly LGBTQ2S+ judges in the Alberta Court of Justice)
Murray Billett (Diversity Advisor for the RCMP, 2SLGBTQ+ advocate and human rights activist)
This event is presented in partnership with the Edmonton Queer History Project, Edmonton Community Foundation and the Alberta Human Rights Commission.

Join us this Pride Month for a special screening of Pride vs. Prejudice: The Delwin Vriend Story — the award-winning documentary directed by DarrinHagen that tells the true story of one man’s fight for equality and the landmark SupremeCourt decision that changed Canada forever. This screening celebrates the resilience and contributions of our local 2SLGBTQI+ community and shows how one person’s courage can drive national change.
This event will also include a screening of the short film Between Two Worlds, from local creators from the Empowered Filmmaker series.

LGBT+ Film Festival Poland
Pride vs. Prejudice: The Delwin Vriend Story, the acclaimed documentary chronicling a landmark Canadian human rights case, has been invited for an eight-city screening tour across Poland from April 4–18, 2025. This initiative is made possible at the invitation of the Canadian Embassy in Poland and the 2025 LGBT+ Film Festival Poland, with screenings set to take place in Warsaw, Gdansk, Konin, Lodz, Szczecin, Wroclaw, Krakow, and Poznan.

YEG Campus Pride Week
Pride vs Prejudice: Reception, Film & Panel
The University of Alberta, Faculty of Law is very excited to be hosting "Pride vs Prejudice: Reception, Film & Panel" on Tuesday, March 11, to celebrate Pride Week at the University of Alberta and MacEwan University. Everyone is welcome!
The evening will feature a screening of Pride vs Prejudice: The Delwin Vriend Story, followed by a panel discussion featuring Doug Stollery, Justice Julie Lloyd and Senator Paula Simons, all of whom feature in the film, to discuss this historical victory and its continued relevance today. Proceeds from this event will be donated to the Trans ID Clinic, a vital program run by Student Legal Services of Edmonton (SLS).
Tickets are $10.

PIE Day Screening
